Dear Diary: I adopted a cat!

Marble is officially a member of the family!

I didn’t think that I would own another pet, especially after my beautiful little Japanese Spitz Mana passed away in 2021. It was too traumatic for me… and probably the first real heartbreak that I had ever experienced. Living without her for over a year was difficult but I’m happy that I took that time to really reflect on everything. And the one thing that I realised was that I was ready to help an animal in need. I just had all this free space and no one was using it, so I decided to become a foster carer.

A cat foster carer.

I just couldn’t bear looking after another dog; mentally I felt like I was betraying my Mana. So, I signed up and within 3 days I was given a little grey cat to nurse back to health. He got hit by a car and they had to remove his eye. But that’s another story.

Fostering Marble for almost 3 years has been, well… life changing. It was only meant to be for 2 months! But the raft of medical issues he had to go through pushed out his adoption significantly. But all through it, he’s been the bravest little cat.

To be fair, he’s the most placid, laid back, gentle cat that I have ever encountered. Like, even my childhood cat Bondi used to scratch me up all the time. Marble doesn’t scratch, bite or fight – he’s just a squirmer. I think I got very lucky being paired up with him, because I could have received a nightmare of a cat that would have put me off them forever. But this one? Well, his personality makes up for his health issues.

I didn’t think that I would adopt him; I just don’t want my heart to get broken all over again. But, we’ve been through so much that it was just impossible for me not to care for him after all this time – or imagine my life without him anymore. So when I got the email saying that the vets had cleared him, it was a no brainer for me.

He does have alot of medical issues that he will have for life, but I’m sure that I can handle it. I’m grateful to my past self for decided to become a foster carer – otherwise, I would never have met him. I’ve seen his recovery and blossom into a cheeky little boy full of affection I’m so privileged to have been part of his journey.

All the staff at Cathaven have been absolutely wonderful and I can’t thank them enough for all their help – and their continued dedication to helping find cats and kittens their forever home.

Welcome home Marble 🙂

Much love,

P.S If you’d like to see more of little Marble, I’ve made a post on instagram 🙂
