I was actually meant to go last year but life things happened and I had to postpone it until today.
It’s been a long time since I’ve needed to get a filling (especially with the amount of sugar that I’ve eaten over the years), so I was surprised that I ended up getting two today! In all honesty, I bet that they told me last year and I just forgot.
It was also my first time getting a filling without a numbing agent. The dentist said it was because they were very small, meaning they weren’t going to be so close to the nerve, so I shouldn’t feel any pain… but I felt a little bit of nervy pain with the bigger filling, but nothing extreme.
I found that the hardest part was keeping my mouth open wide enough for them to put the filling in, and trying not to swallow. I know that they suck out the saliva and dry it out as much as possible, but there were a couple of times where I couldn’t help it and I swallowed. But I don’t think it impacted their ability to put the fillings in.
I have to say, I think that fillings have come along way. They cured it using a UV light – I don’t remember ever having something like that before. And then I was told that I could eat pretty much straight way! Except for hard stuff like nuts and pork crackle lol. For some reason, I thought I had to wait an hour or something, so that was actually a pleasant surprise.
And speaking of surprises, it only ended up costing me $120 out of pocket, so that was half what I was expecting to pay. It was actually a relief, because I thought I’d have to use up all my cash allowance.
Winning!
It was definitely a little sore for about 4 hours afterwards, but it’s not hurting anymore. I have to go back next week so they can do a checkup on how it’s settled, and if any adjustments need to be made. I should have asked if I need to pay for the consult, but the dentist said I can cancel it if it’s not causing me any problems.
I need to look after my teeth more. In fact, I’m probably doing that indirectly by eating healthier. I just have to work on reducing the amount of sugar that I eat, and just better oral care. I’m thinking about getting an electric toothbrush and a water glosser. I’ve heard that the latter are better than using string floss. I’m going to wait for a sale and then buy them at the same time.
In the meantime, my trusty Colgate soft-bristle toothbrush will have to do the trick!
Much love,
